YVONNE MCDONNELL – “THE RARE ONE”

During her time studying in Portsmouth Yvonne McDonnell started to perform her acoustic folk live back in 2011 and now three years on has since re-located to London playing live versions of her self-penned EP “The Rare One” alongside Joy Division and BRMC covers.

Opening track “My Own Advice” is the strongest tune on the EP with McDonnell’s voice showing her Irish sounding roots and strong natural vocals setting the scene for the following tracks.  The extended plays title song “The Rare One” is also in the same vein, with personal lyrics about relationships – as are the words to “Saying Goodbye” this time with more simplistic guitar backing reminiscent to that of America’s Cat Power.

When it comes to female singer songwriters though it’s all too easy to put them in the same bracket, but with Yvonne McDonnell citing the likes of Laura Marling and Lucy Rose among her influences you have a general idea of what to expect – although a passion for older folk music means there’s a maturity in Yvonne’s guitar playing, whilst continuing to focus on the trials and tribulations of a broken heart in the EP’s closer “Home Truths” making this release a rather pleasant listen.
