Every so often a band comes along where the hype indicates they’re “ones to look out for” or “the next big thing”. In the case of Wet Leg, this is emphasised even more so locally with the band being based just over the water on the Isle of Wight.
In some respects, the evening was a bit of a weird scenario at the Wedgewood Rooms. Given several post-lockdown shows across the south coast that would normally be rammed, at times have had a little more shoulder space room normal. Whereas any Wet Leg tickets were like gold dust, with the gig selling out pretty much the moment it was announced.
By all accounts, ticket scammers and online bots had out in force too, with the Wedge on top of fraudsters and keeping people informed of such antics. All this excitement before the band had even released an album.
Although there’s certainly something that warrants the buzz. Especially now the long-awaited debut has finally been released.
The slight quirkiness of Wet Leg are officially down to a duo fronted by singer/guitarist Rhian Teasdale. Although she has also been known for providing operatic style backing vocals to fellow Isle of Wighter’s Plastic Mermaids. Yet in her own outfit, lyrics are delivered in a more laid back, often spoken word approach.
Wet Leg – Wedgewood Rooms, April 2022
In some ways, this is very much all about Rhian. However, the rest of Wet Leg’s live band is on form too. In particular, Joshua Omead Mobaraki, switching effortlessly between guitar and synth to add some groovy extra layers. Whereas official member Hester Chambers at times plays more of a background role, albeit an integral part of the project, along with an obvious loving rapport between Rhian Teasdale and herself.
The audience on the other hand seemed a little more subdued, leaving their full appreciation until between songs. Calmly absorbing everything before their night unsurprisingly peaked with the ever so catchy “Chaise Longue”.
Given the band are in their infancy and doesn’t currently have much material available, the night out at the Wedgewood Rooms was short-lived. Although one in which Mr Teeth would happily see Wet Leg again all day long… all day long, on the Chaise Longue.
