Review: Heavy Weather/Paradise
The vocals of Tom Bryan are usually reminiscent of somewhere between an old Mississippi blues singer and Ben Ottewell from Gomez. His role as former frontman in Shoot the Duke, while sounding as though he smoked 60 a day, also proved Tom as a pretty damn fine harmonica player.
All of which made Shoot the Duke standout from the crowd within the local scene. After all, we’re not in the USA but sunny ole Southsea, where young blues-inspired singers are less common. When it was announced Tom Bryan was going solo, I somewhat expected much more of the same – to which I certainly wouldn’t have been disappointed.
However, truth be told, “Heavy Weather“ and “Paradise“ showcase an altogether different side to Tom’s talents. One that initially took Mr Teeth Reviews a little getting used to, purely down to my already pre-conceived expectations.

Tom Bryan – “Heavy Weather/Paradise”
Since first listen of Tom Bryan‘s solo efforts, far too much time has elapsed and here I am listening with fresh ears. So as I kick back after dark, the much smoother chill out music transcends through my headphones.
Both songs in fact become a pleasant surprise, with the odd blues lick on both still creeping through, to which I raise a smile.
The first tune is more of a straight forward tune, production is simplistic yet beautifully crafted, adding to the ambience of the track. While “Paradise” combines it’s relaxed vocals with a spot of Nizlopi style looped beatboxing.
While Tom Bryan’s previous band would have people up dancing, on the basis of these numbers, the live performances are likely to attract a more laid back affair. Something I’m personally looking forward to experiencing.
Although if you wish to find out for yourself, Tom’s flying solo at this year’s Icebreaker Festival in Southsea. Performing at the Wine Vaults at 7.30pm on Saturday 31st January.
