TIM BURGESS – WEDGEWOOD ROOMS

LIVE REVIEW: TIM BURGESS – WEDGEWOOD ROOMS

Charlatans’ frontman Tim Burgess live at the Wedgewood Rooms, like many a gig, was much delayed due to Covid. Yet it was a night we’ll worth waiting for, even if one that was surprisingly quieter than expected.

Alas, when you’ve got a band this good on stage, the Wedge still comes alive. Tim’s touring band features two keyboard players, one of whom being ex-Julian Cope/Spiritualized’s Timothy Lewis (aka Thighpaulsandra).

Standing alongside Timothy is a particularly talented fiddle player in Helen O’Hara (Dexys Midnight Runners), adding a dimension that musically is quite removed from the Charlatans. However, with Tim’s distinct vocals there’s a certain familiarity along the way.

Having said that, despite a prolific back-catalogue the set itself relies heavily on Tim’s solo career. In particular latest album “I Love the New Sky“. With a mixture of experimental numbers (“Sweet Old Sorry Me”) and catchy tracks in “Empathy for the Devil” and “I Got This” performed to an audience who, quite understandably, were unfazed by the lack of Charlatans songs.

Although there was an old classic saved for the last tune of the evening. With “The Only One I Know” given a new lease of life, complete with an intro that would have kept the most diehard of fans guessing. As such ending a top night and one in which Tim Burgess was back online in time for his regular Listening Party.
