The Who – New Album 2019 “Who”
Earlier this year the Who announced their new album in 2019 would be released, as well as a symphonic 32 date “Moving on!” tour.
It’s been 13 years since their last studio album, with “Endless Wire” in itself the first Who album since the passing of bassist John Entwistle in 2002. Since then Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend have continued to appear live, carrying on the Who name.
Something which many people think maybe should have ended with the death of Keith Moon (1946-1978) and his unreplaceable character. However, the Who releasing a new album in 2019 isn’t the first time Daltrey and Townsend have been back in the studio since “Endless Wire”.
In fact, Pete Townsend contributed significantly to the Roger Daltrey solo album “As Long As I Have You” last year. With Townsend playing on 7 tracks, in theory, it could have easily appeared as a new album by the Who back then. However, “As Long As I Have You” was very much a Roger Daltrey project, focussing heavily on cover songs that have influenced him over the years.
It’s certainly a fantastic album, with a well-chosen set of tunes suited to an ageing Roger Daltrey in fine voice. What’s more, it set high expectations for the hotly anticipated new album by the Who in 2019.
The Who – New Album 2019 “Who”
As of September 2019, the Who announced details of the new album, simply entitled “Who”, along with track listings and insight into song content for the release.
While there’s still debate as to whether or not the Who should be releasing material under the same name, latest single “Ball and Chain” blow any fears out the water. It’s a track that very much has the classic sound of the Who stamped all over it.
There’s the Pete Townsend acoustic/layered intro before Daltrey kicks in with the line “Down in Guantanamo, we still got the ball and chain”. Lyrically, it would appear, the Who are set to touch on a variety of subjects.
Some being of a personal and hard-hitting nature, going on initial write-ups elsewhere in the press. With subjects such as the London fires at Grenfell Tower, spirituality and reincarnation and that of musical theft. The latter, presumably, in relation to (alleged) copyright infringements or ownership rights on previous releases.
Meanwhile, Roger Daltrey has been quoted as claiming the new album by the Who is set to be their best since Quadrophenia. As to whether or not that’s the case, we will just have to wait and see.
