The Proclaimers – Portsmouth Guildhall
Currently on tour promoting their 11th studio album, the Proclaimers at Portsmouth Guildhall was very much a concert for their long-time fans. In fact, pre-gig drinks across the road from the venue and you could pick out vast numbers attending the show. Largely due to the many Scottish accents, kilts and Celtic FC hats and scarves.
When it came to the vocals of the Proclaimers, Craig Reid backed by twin brother Charlie, were undeniably Scottish. It’s all part of their appeal and why the Proclaimers have accumulated an almost cult-like following.
The first song and opening track from the current album “The Angry Cyclist” is no different. Although it’s soon apparent that Craig can belt out a tune with minimal effort. His stance at the microphone is also somewhat laidback, nothing too fancy yet subtly effective.
Likewise with brother Charlie on backing vocals and guitar. It’s almost as if he’s there to do the job in hand, naturally bringing in the harmonies when required and his playing blending into the rhythm section. The Proclaimers backing band were clearly accomplished musicians too, all of whom actively involved in making the concert a success.
As for the brothers, the pair knew how to connect with their fans. Several songs dedicated to members of the audience, presumably via direct requests. In return, those watching responded by singing along to much of their back catalogue. It wasn’t too long until the more famous tunes, such as “I’m on my Way” and “(I’m Gonna be) 500 Miles” had people dancing in the isles, overall a great night spent in good company.
