3Times7 – “Rain in Chicago”
Inspired by their break in the USA, “Rain in Chicago” by 3Times7 is the new album from the Sussex based duo.
Having taken time out on a blues pilgrimage from Chicago to New Orleans, anyone would think that 3Times7 had sold their soul to the devil along the way. The end result, an album very much lending itself to the big band sound of Chicago, rather than that of the downtrodden roots from the acoustic delta blues.
Although that’s not to say the influence of John Hurt and Robert Johnson aren’t touched upon for the stripped back “Graveyard Blues”. However, let us start at the beginning with two particularly strong numbers in “Money to Burn” and “I Like it When it Rains”.
Both of which have that classic New Orleans jive sound about them. In fact, with “Rain in Chicago” 3Times7 pretty much stick to traditional structures and subject matters throughout. You know the ones, rain, the devil, being broke and down and on your luck.
The Devil in Me
Although let’s face it, you have to go some to change the face of one of the world’s oldest musical genres. Even where the odd track “Knock Knock” may be lacking something, I can imagine it would surely get the crowds up and twisting the night away when played live.
Then there’s the horn section, who shine during “Devil in Me” and “Back on Beale Street”, which really help bring the album together overall. While “Gospel Blues” continues to show 3Times7 have certainly studied their craft, both vocally and musically.
