Having seen Reef at the Engine Rooms last week (review here), today the band were live instore at Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl. As a somewhat more intimate setting, the lunchtime show meant only those in the know managed to pop out of work in time to witness another great performance.
Yet this was also a gig with the crowd spilling out onto the street, including at one point frontman Gary Stringer. In-store sessions at Pie & Vinyl may well be a tight squeeze at the best of times, but today was purely due to the popularity of a band that rose to prominence in the mid-90’s.
In fact, the setlist of 6-7 songs still included a homage to those early hits. Gary’s voice sounding on form during “Come Back Brighter” through to the classic “Place Your Hands“. Within a more stripped-back setting, it’s even more apparent just how much of an underrated vocalist Gary Stringer really is.

Meanwhile, guitarists Jesse Wood (son of Ronnie) and newest recruit Amy Newton were sounding great through their smaller amps. As too, of course, was the lurching figure of Jack Bessant on his low-strung bass.
It wasn’t just about the old classics though, as the main reason for these kinds of shows is to promote a band’s new album. As such, the instore included both sides of the latest release “Shoot Me Your Ace”. In particular the beautiful slower number in “Right on“, alongside the out and out rock-n-roll of “Wolfman“.
Afterwards, it was then time for Reef to get some fresh air ready for the outdoor signing session. As well as a chance to put their order in for some good old pie and mash. If only every Thursday lunchtime was this much fun.
