Putrid – “Antichrist Above”
Hailing from deepest darkest Peru, South America’s Putrid don’t hold back when it comes to unleashing the “Antichrist Above“. In fact, according to their own biography Putrid lay claim to “produce and spread violent, filthy and obscure noise of metal”.
As such, combined with the satanic imagery on the CD’s cover, it will come as no surprise this is an album of black and death metal. The 3-piece comprising of Evil Avatar on “Blasphemies and Axes”, Sacrificie – Four Scourge of Sadistik (bass?) and the Mayor of War on Drums. Presumably none of these stage names matching those given to them upon their demonic birth.
This isn’t the 1st release from the band, who have been around since the end of 2009, so existing fans will no doubt be aware of what to expect. Although, even like myself, if this is your introduction to Putrid, you’re not going to be under any misconceptions.
Lyrically, from the opening verse of “Warfare in Golgotha” it’s also clear that Putrid are more than happy to make their feelings known when it comes to organised religion. It’s a subject matter that’s always going to go hand in hand with black metal, but the South Americans certainly aren’t afraid to let make their opinions known.
As for the music, brutally heavy, with the occasional downtempo breaks in the 7-minute “Pig of Liars“. Meanwhile, almost every track features a Kerry King/Geoff Hanneman (Slayer, Slayer, Slayer) style guitar solo. Almost to the point of overkill, as your ears are left anticipating the next slurry of notes to wail from the speakers.
Ultimately on many levels “Antichrist Above” by Putrid is all rather contrived, somewhat standard death metal. However, there are times that’s all you need, aggressive and to the point, with the volume turned up to six hundred and sixty-six.
