PUSSYCAT AND THE DIRTY JOHNSONS – EDGE OF THE WEDGE 2nd November 2011

Some of the best nights out are done on a whim and having decided to pop over to the Edge I wasn’t too sure what to expect, but three bands for three pounds I thought why not…

First up were Shooting Fish, female led punk act who after initial problems getting the sound levels right punched through a hard hitting set of angst and although not much movement from the packed little venue seemed to go down fairly well.

A contrast to the edgy punk of the shouty opening act, Vortex Buzz were up next with their well polished southern rock – good ole rock n roll, a singer whose gravel voice powered through the tight workings of the rhythm section with a lead churning out some nice solos.

Clad in leopard print Pussycat prowled the crowd screaming her heart out, as the Dirty Johnsons churned out their psychobilly riffs that would make the Cramps proud.

Stunning stage presence and great tunes such as “Trouble with the Devil” and “Wolfman Sideburns” it made a hard day in the office seem irrelevant and having recently supported the likes of the Meteors, I think Pussycat and the Dirty Johnsons are already making a well deserved name for themselves.

Highlight of the set “Lipstick and Testoterone” summed up what this band were about and, having been filmed by Portsmouth University students, live footage will no doubt be appearing on youtube.com soon enough I’m sure.
