There’s something special about vinyl, you bond with it more than an MP3, you own a piece of art rather than just the music and it can often tell a story. Rather fitting then, that the former Strangelove frontman Patrick Duff is using this medium for a split release with Scotland singer songwriter Craig John Davidson.
Having experienced life in the nighties on the road with the likes of Radiohead, Patrick Duff has slowed things down a little musically focusing on his stunning voice and acoustic guitar finger picking. This is where the single “Thought Birds” from Patricks album “Visions of the Underworld” comes into its own, beautifully simple yet hypnotic and heart-warming as Duff brings alive the atmosphere of the cottage in which it was recorded.
Turn the record over and you get the slightly more complex sounds of Craig John Davidson, hailing from Aberdeen and very much using his roots and love of other folk singers such as Bob Dylan and John Martyn to influence a more modern sound.
Whereby Patrick Duff relies on the direct approach with his live in the studio guitar playing and quality of the song-writing itself, Davidson introduces more soundscapes to back up his side of the record in “Mr Manners” making for two tracks that complement each other with their differences yet work alongside one another in their similarities.
