Taking a break from playing the odd low key gig here and there to settle down and work on recordings of his solo works, Nick Poore along with the help of the Yesterday People releases new EP “Semaphore “ and a stripped back folk affair.
Opening with “Soul Boy” the first track of the EP is a subdued number focusing on the acoustic guitar and vocals of Nicks as it subtly introduces the backing of people of yesterday member Ed and eases you in to three tracks that follow.
If you’re into old folk stars such as Nick Drake, then fellow Nick provides that 60’s feel on “The Whole of my Heart”, lyrically a tried and tested singer-songwriters favourite topic yet played with the beauty of the aforementioned nineteen sixties romantic poet.
The next song “Gonna Build a House” continues with the classic folk sound, yet combining it with the additional guitar work of Ed whilst the jazz influenced backing of Maria’s vocals make for a well-crafted number – the production of the chorus reminiscent of the slightly more modern artist Joseph Arthur.
The final song on the four track EP “Distant Shore” moves away from Nick Poore’s vocals and becomes a showcase for Maria Baileys’s voice – Maria being more prominent when it comes to live performances with a natural flow between the two singers coming together on stage, whilst the backing music for “Distant Shore” then ends with a rather nice bluesy solo fading out to bring “Semaphore” to a close.
So with the middle two tracks on the EP showing Poore at his best it’s a shame there’s only the one track on offer with the female lead vocals – but at the same time it just means Nick Poore & the Yesterday People need to show up again on the live circuit where they often mix several covers alongside a handful of their own compositions, making a versatile booking for your smaller venue.
