Whilst performing with Killed by 9V Batteries and Sex Jams, Austrian singer/guitarist Wolfgang Mostl has built up an impressive collection of home recordings under the band name of Mile Me Deaf, and the Brando EP certainly has that home grown feel about it.
In contrast to the catchy title track the second tune “I Thought I Could Remember” is a one and half minute chaotic noise driven piece with pounding drums, messy guitars and vocals that are screamed into the microphone rather than that of the rather pleasant melodies on the EP’s opener.
We are then met with “Sometimes a Man Needs to be a Human”, another upbeat number mixing up the indie-rock with some nice harmonica work and random piano.
Perhaps the most experimental track on offer here is “Hands Up”, a soundscape of different elements, with vocals slurred over the top of programmed beats, sampled noises and guitar.
The closing track however “Homebound and Secure” is more straightforward, a stripped down acoustic number interspersed with Dylan like harmonica although still has the lo-fi recording element in keeping with the rest of this EP, making all five tunes work well together without being too much of the same thing.
So if you like 4-track bedroom recordings, rather than that of over produced songs with no character, then you won’t be disappointed and as such should be sure to check out Mile Me Deaf and the Brando EP as well as a few other gems available for download from the bands website.
