KAMP – “CLAIRVOYANCE”

As a youngster, John Kampouropoulos (or just Kamp for short) spent his time sat behind a drum kit, eventually stepping out to take to the microphone and becoming a frontman. The result in recent years has become the KAMP band.

The group hail from Athens, Greece, although there’s a strong influence of late 80’s/early 90’s British bands. Lyrics are written in English and there’s a touch of Wayne Hussey (from the Mission) to the delivery on the vocals – coincidentally both the Mission and Kamp also have a track called “Wasteland”, something that I missed upon first listen.

KAMP – “Clairvoyance”

Opening song for Clairvoyance is “Nonsense”, a slower atmospheric number, which is then followed with “Humans”, a short and punchier track. Elsewhere there’s a solo in “Galileo” that sounds a little bit of Pink Floyd, while “Happy…” is a stripped down and reflective ballad.

Title song “Clairvoyance” is one of the strongest on the release, there’s nice guitar playing and the tremolo reverberates throughout. Kamps’ vocals stand out on this track too, the slightly goth-like singing coming into fruition.

There’s a duet with “Faith” as Virginia Fragoulatzi provides additional vocals. It may be a cheesy song about love but we can forgive Kamp really, they touch on darker subject matters elsewhere and ultimately it works well as the penultimate track.

Overall the album is moody and will appeal to classic rock fans without getting particularly heavy, while likely to bring in those with a love of old school goth music. So, with Clairvoyance having come out last year, it will be interesting to see which fans Kamp have picked up along the way.
