FLAT RUFUS – “FLAT RUFUS” EP

There’s something to be said about doing things yourself, recording an EP in your very own bedroom takes out the stress of studio time and gives you complete control of your artistic direction, something that Flat Rufus has taken to with his debut solo EP.

Whilst making up a third of Bristol based Milo’s Planes for a more noisy grunge/indie outfit, here the man behind Flat Rufus has created an ambient release whilst capturing the DIY ethos of his other project – although that’s not to say it’s any less noise driven, just it’s a more subtle approach.

Opening up with the simply titled “SignsFlat Rufus has captured an atmospheric soundtrack which comes to life with the nostalgic video that accompanies it, with a sort of “Wonder Years” TV show montage helping to give the song itself a little more depth whilst having a mid-nighties indie feel about it.

The middle section of the EP focusses more on the layered vocals, “Fester” showing the potential song-writing on offer whilst “Won’t be seen” has a hypnotic repetitiveness as it builds up just enough to carry on the effects into the last track of “In Ways”.

There may be similarities throughout each of the four songs on offer here but given this is the first solo recording by Flat Rufus it does go to show what he is capable of outside the main band, so although it may not be the most uplifting of EP’s it’s certainly one that’s in keeping with those late post-pub moments, where you want to just put on a CD and chill out before calling a night.
