EVIL SCARECROW – EDGE OF THE WEDGE PORTSMOUTH 26th July 2012

Stray Bullets Kill

Bass player Spikey Mark is well known for his regular work at the venue, and it was great to see his band kick off proceedings with killer riffs, fronted by solid growling vocals that make your rib cage rattle, Stray Bullets Kill leave the stage and the bar has been set for the night.

Bloodworks

Looking at the guitars you know what you’re in for with Bloodworks, back away if you don’t want to be deafened.  I know age doesn’t matter but these lads were aged between 14 and 16 when I saw them a couple of years ago, well they’re only slightly older now of course, and lead singer Kieran has still got the vocal chords that would give Glen Benton a run for his money.

Having become well established on the local scene and with nice heavy tunes I hope to see Bloodworks going places in their old age, check them out for sure.

Evil Scarecrow

Having seen them on the same bill as Bloodworks previously, I knew what fun to expect with Evil Scarecrows comedy mix of Gwar meets Cradle of Filth via a tip of the hat to Maiden, and tonight it was one ridiculously good set.

“Vampire Trousers” and “Sixty Six Minutes Past Six” are just some of the highlights, but there are a lot of novelty bands out there – the thing is Evil Scarecrow have the musical talent to back it up.  Close your eyes during tunes such as “Blacken the Everything” and you can easily forget you’re listening to a comedy band… although seeing a sold out Edge can-can dancing to a cover of Europes “Final Countdown”, or lyrics dedicated to the librarian as the result of losing the overdue “Book of Doom” and you soon remember why you’re enjoying yourself in the first place.

Vocalist Dr Hell was genuinely excited by the reaction from the crowd and guitarist Brother Pain insisted on high fiving everyone in the venue, but the height of silliness came in the form of “Robototron”, a stupidly catchy track whereby everyone (and I mean everyone) partook in the future of heavy metal…. geometric robotic dancing, see it to believe it.

Cheers
