Crash Course
Opening the evening were UK Subs tribute Crash Course, not a tribute as in trying to take on the persona of Charlie Harpers band but more an open appreciation for some classic punk rock songs whilst making them their own and getting the night off to a good start.
Radioactive Bones
Mixing up punk rock with an eighties metal sound, Radioactive Bones played through set focussing on drawn out guitar solos rather than the more traditional three minutes of punk attitude.
On Trial UK
Frontman Johnny Wah Wah was very much the focus point of these guys visually with great stage presence, but was backed musically with hard hitting drums and some great punk riffs – having been around a little while I’d imagine there will be many more gigs in the pipeline, so be sure to check them out.
East Town Pirates
Headlining the night were Suffolk’s answer to Dropkick Murphy’s, but via the more sleazy rock n roll influences by the likes of Dogs D’Amour, with frontman Rikki Rumoldew’s gravelly vocals providing the perfect voice as well as a great stage presence for instantly catchy sing along tunes such as “Murdertown” and “Ship Ahoy”.
Following the festive period January can often be a difficult month for gig-goers and pubs in general, but with traditional sea shanty “What should we do with the Drunken Sailer” East Town Pirates had everyone in high spirits, leaving their woes behind and singing along – as they did with the less obvious cover in Rocket from the Crypts “On a Rope”.
So with a bottle of rum given to the best dressed pirate it was another great night down the Barn and if this motley crew ever try to embark upon your ship, be sure to let them aboard, grab them a drink, have a dance, and enjoy the party.
