CARDBOARD HIT – “SUBJECT TO STATUS”

Not so much an EP as advertised but a two track single from East Sussex, where the three members that make up Cardboard Hit formed the band out of friendship and a mutual respect to create a group that just played what came naturally, rather than deliberately trying to fit into any specific pigeon holes.

It’s when a band forms on this basis that you’re never too sure which direction it’s going to head in and with the group citing themselves as garage rock sludgy distorted guitars often come to mind, but with Cardboard Hit this isn’t the case so think the funky bass lines of early Red Hot Chili Peppers rather than the fuzzy rawness of the Stooges.

The first song here is “Say Yes” with a solid riff and a slightly heavier number than its counterpart whilst still keeping the Jonathon Davis (Korn) style vocals, yet this tune is likely to appeal to a more mainstream audience than the US metallers as whilst Cardboard Hit have hints of nu-metal along with stating their 90’s grunge influences the production is that of a much cleaner sound.

It’s the second track of the two though in “All the Voices” where the band sound at their best and slightly more individual, so no surprise this song was given the video treatment showing the trio having fun in the studio, which is a rather fitting image for the groovy upbeat number and in keeping with a band just wanting to focus on playing music.
