BLAYZE DEVILLE – “DESERT ROSE”

I had little to go on when this little track from South Africa came my way and so I decided to check out some of Blayze Deville‘s other work first.  The first tune I put on was “The Other Time in Cape Town” which whilst it isn’t really my thing, gave an indication of where Deville is coming from as an artist and producer and is one more suited to the RnB fans.

Next up was a track by fellow South African act Skinny Gibbz, said to be produced by and featuring Blayze Deville which gave another side to what “Desert Rose” itself may bring, ultimately “Wa Rata” is a well produced track but edging towards the gangsta rap side of things rather than that of more honest Old School hip hop that would cater for my personal tastes.

So with “Wa Rata” giving stereotypical visions of bling, low-riders and scantily clad girls (should a video accompany the track) sure enough the cover to Blayze Deville solo piece “Desert Rose” has a picture that some may find all too revealing, but unlike the tunes that came before-hand this one is more worthy of a couple of listens.

The production is clear and crisp, it’s not the RnB that had been served up earlier and there aren’t any rhymes flowing, but it’s a nice chilled after-dark offering.

Basically you could stick “Desert Rose” on when you get back from an evening out and aren’t quite ready to call it a night without upsetting the neighbors – it may not be to everyone’s tastes but if your into the downtempo beats of Zero 7 or some of Nitin Sawhney‘s collaborations, then on these occasions Blayze Deville could easily be slipped into the mix.
