After a couple of relatively quiet nights at the Wedgewood Rooms, Black Honey attracted a more then reasonable sized audience last week.
If anything, this was the closest I’d seen to a sold-out night at a small venue in quite some time. Yes, it may have been a grey Monday night but the youngsters were out in force. Ready to show their appreciation for Brighton’s indie pop-rockers.
The current tour has been in support of Black Honey’s rather successful top 10 album “Written & Directed”. Although the setlist itself is split fairly evenly between both the new release and their self-titled debut. Both of which come across with a similar vibe. There’s not much to separate either album when performed live either.
As the moment singer/guitarist Izzy Phillips launched into “I like the way you die”, this was a band sounding as tight as they do on record. Yet with the Libertines Carl Barat and Mike Kerr from Royal Blood involved in the latest release, Black Honey manage to combine poptastic melancholy moments with those of a grittier rock n roll nature.
