Making a stand on behalf of those that need support, the anti-austerity and pro-community movement of “We Shall Overcome” brings together musicians and activists in a series of events across the country. It is with this in mind that Argonaut have released their new EP as an online exclusive, only downloadable with a charitable donation of £2.00 in support of DPAC, Disabled People Against Cuts, to give them it’s full name.
What better song to use as the lead track than one which slams “the man” with a tag line of “you have lots of money, but you are not rich”. The majority of us will no doubt agree with this sentiment, but unfortunately it’s all too often the ones not putting their hands in their pockets are those that have the money and are writing the rulebooks. Politics aside, the song itself is a catchy tune, the previous release from Argonaut in “Try” had a sort of Butch Vig/Shirley Manson’s Garbage vibe, whilst “Not Rich” is a short sharp and pop-tastic anti-establishment rant.
Back this with another new track in “Weekending” and again Argonaut have changed direction, more of a folk ballad than the angry punk that influences the first song. There’s some Dylan-esque harmonica playing, whilst the guest vocals of Lucy Joplin make for a traditional two-pronged duet with the singers trading verses.
With only three songs this is more of an online equivalent to an old fashioned CD single than an EP, the two aforementioned tracks being nicely rounded off by an acoustic version of “Not Rich”. So for a mere £2.00 you not only get to show your solidarity for a good cause, but have the addition of some great new tunes in your MP3 collection.
