Returning with their 5th album, the Pigeon Detectives have pushed themselves with a more challenging record. It’s something the schoolboy friends had made a conscious decision with, ditching any songs that started to resemble their early days too closely.
It’s been almost 10 years since breaking onto the scene with the indie rock of “Wait for Me”, so with “Broken Glances” the Pigeon Detectives are in a more reflective mood. It’s not that they have become unrecognisable, but with producer Richard Formby behind the mixing desk there was a need to re-think the writing process.
“It was agonising at times to watch a song we’d spent 2 years writing and rehearsing, be broken down into little pieces and then put back together…”

The end result is some of the Pigeon Detectives most diverse work. Fans of old will appreciate tracks such as “Lose Control”, but the new album also has its melancholy moments. “Munroe” and “Postcards” are slower and dreamy – while “Falling in Love” is left sparse with a beautifully simple piano piece, helping to focus on Matt Bowman’s vocals. Elsewhere the tempo is then brought back up a notch for the likes of “Stay With me”, a more electronic influenced tune.
Ending with “Change my World” the album provides a catchy chorus, one I can see being a popular live number. Hit single “Take her Back” from the 2007 debut will no doubt continue to see crowds jumping about when played live, but “Change my Word” will leave them swaying from side to side, arm in arm.
The band are currently on a UK tour, stopping off in Portsmouth at the Wedgewood Rooms on the 14th March 2017.
